A documentary displaying the violation of the rights of Ethiopian airlines employees will be shown on Nahoo Television today May 23, 2020, at 9:00 pm.Addis Zeybe was one of the prominent platforms that reported on the disagreement between Ethiopian Airlines employees and the company itself at different times. We found out, however, that the issue was complicated and unsolved because the complaints we were receiving from the staff members did not stop despite the fact that there was some news coverage. At the time, we were preparing a documentary to give a context to hate speech in Ethiopia. As part of the airline's scope and complexity, our newsroom planned to produce a documentary. When we made that decision, we were still worried that we would not get enough information. However, the leaders of the Ethiopian Airlines Basic Labour Union and the President of the Ethiopian Workers' Confederation (EEMCO), Ato Kassahun Follo, cooperated in explaining the matter in detail. We conducted long hours of interviews with workers, labour unions, Workers' Confederation, senior staff, and legal experts. We asked for a reply on this matter via e-mail and a letter to the Ethiopian Airlines Group and the former trade union, as we were concerned with the ethics of our profession, and also for the sake of the report to be complete. The head of Communications at the time, Mr Henok Sirak, responded to our email and requested that we send a copy of our organization's media license and a recorded file of the staff we contacted. We attached the certificate we got from the Ethiopian Broadcast Authority(EBA) and responded by saying that we can send the questions we had already prepared for the organization but not the recorded files of the interviews. In response to that the Public Relations Officer of the company sent us a threat that the company would sue us in court. The email conversation is attached to this article. While we were disappointed with the absence of the organization, we kept on with our work to produce and distribute the extensive information we had gathered. The occurrence of the Coronavirus pandemic in Ethiopia delayed the completion of our work but we still pushed on. We almost finished the project last Sunday, May 17, 2020, working on it till 3 in the morning. We only left the office because we had to sleep. But we didn’t find our office the way we left it the next morning. Our office had been robbed. Four laptop computers and the hard disk containing the documentary files were gone. We immediately called the Kirkos sub-city police. Investigations to the matter are ongoing.Although we were concerned that the only documents and devices that were stolen were things linked to the project we returned to our work leaving it to the police to investigate the matter.Luckily we had a backup of the files so we proceeded to doing the video again. The document we had was not complete as it was originally prepared, but we exhausted our archive and prepared it again thinking that the main idea will explain it. It will be televised on Nahoo TV today evening to reach more people, and then we will be making it available to all of you on Addis Zeybe’s YouTube channel. We would like to extend our gratitude to Nahoo Television, the leadership at Ethiopian Airlines Group labour union, and EEMCO.
