Khartoum to host Abiy Ahmed and Michael Pompeo simultaneously
Khartoum will host Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo as the two leaders traveled to Sudan this morning. Sudan is part of Pompeo’s trip in the middle east as part of the efforts by President Trump’s administration to persuade Arab countries to normalize their relations with Israel. Prime Minister Abiy will also take a trip to Sudan to talk over bilateral issues with Sudanese authorities even though the details of the trip are not known yet. Pompeo completed the first agenda on his middle east trip expected to be between August 23 and 28; Israel. He met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday where he discussed several issues related to the middle east peace process that saw the UAE normalize its relations with Israel. According to the US Department of State Pompeo’s visit to Sudan - for the first time since 2004 - will see him meet Sudanese Prime Minister Abdella Hamdock and Chairman of the  Sovereign Council of Sudan Lt. General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman al-Brunan. According to the New York Times, Pompeo will discuss the continued support from the US for the civilian-led transitional government as well as working on Sudan-Israeli relations. Pompeo will also travel to Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates in the coming week. News of the departure of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Khartoum, Sudan broke earlier today via the twitter page of the Office of the Ethiopian Prime Minister. According to the tweet the prime minister is expected to hold bilateral negotiations with Prime Minister Hamdock and Lt. General Abdel Fattah, the same officials Pompeo is meeting. The tweet does not specify what the bilateral negotiations will be around. The one day visit by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed aligns with Pompeo’s trip to Sudan  which in turn has caused many to speculate about the possible implications of the simultaneous visits.
