Major General Hayelom Araya (1955–1996) was a former commander of EPRDF forces, who joined the Tigray People's Liberation Front as the Ethiopian Revolution broke out. Known for his bravery, General Hayelom successfully led his forces to northern Shewa, and later, Addis Ababa, coming out victorious in 1991. General Hayelom was fatally shot in a restaurant bar in Addis Ababa on February 14, 1996.
