Meet Getu: the Innovator, the Carpenter and Adversary of Emboch (Hyacinth)
His name is Getu Eristu. He has a knack for fixing things and playing with tiny machinery ever since he was a little boy. Born and bred here in the capital around Tikur Ambesa in a place called Meda Garaj, he followed his passion for creating things and made his first machine at a young age.“I made my first machine as a graduation project.” He says in an interview he gave to Addis Zeybe. “I learned in Debrezeit and really liked going to the lakes in my leisure time, that’s when I noticed that motor boats had stopped working around that area. When I asked why, the people that worked there told me that the petrol the boats used was killing of the fish and it was banned because of that so I invented a motor boat that worked with solar energy.” The motor boat uses hydro mechanical and electro mechanical engines and can be used as a immobile hotel on the lake. His love for inventing didn’t stop there. Quite recently, he made a machine that is similar to the solar boat but different than the other because it was specifically made to address the emboch infestation that is currently endangering many lakes of Ethiopia. The boat can cover two to three meters depth and width and can cut 7,000 weed in an hour. “I went to Bahir dar to see the problem and noticed that the machine can be done using tools that are at hand easily so I got motivated to do this particular machine” says Getu.“The boats that are already in use are using engine power that have high temperature and have high amount of residue, they are also very heavy, not to mention their need for maintenance frequently but the boat that I built is different from that.”He says it is different because it uses different systems to operate. “The first one is solar energy, the second system has electrical charger inverter and if that doesn’t work it can be operated by a generator.”“I also added another feature that is not seen in any other boats,” he says “the machine also sucks the residue that comes from the weed or any other thing in the lake, grinds it and gets rid of it.”Getu also has another invention. He made an automatic car washing machine that washes a car within 6-10 minutes using 20-30 liters of water. “The machine will wash the upper and lower body of the car, providing everything that’s needed to clean it.”“Especially at this very moment where people are refraining from touching things because of the coronavirus, this machine comes in handy”This multifaceted individual also makes furniture. He posts the type of designs he can do on his telegram page and makes the furniture upon order. But he says the main problem that innovators like him face is a place where they can invent freely. “The main problem is space most people like me don’t have enough space to create what they desire, the other problem is financial constraint, the cost of the materials needed to build a new idea or machine is very high and we struggle to buy those in order to make something that has guaranteed quality.” He says“I think what we need is a place like an institute for innovators where we can work freely with allocated budget from the government, says Getu “our country is in need of innovators that can solve problems like the emboch weed that is spreading on our lakes”He urges the government and any other bodies that this particular area concerns to work on this untapped potential to make our country better.
