Opposition party in Tigray warns for breaking a tie with Ethiopia

Salsay Woyane Tigray, one of the opposition parties in the Tigray Region, announced that the thread that connects Tigray and Ethiopia had been cut off.

In a press briefing the party gave to reporters in Mekelle, the region’s capital, on May 21, 2021, the party stated that there is no circumstance for Ethiopia and Tigray to proceed as one.

"We’ll be in a position to continue together as long as the people of Tigray are benefited", stated the party in its statement.

The party mentioned it came to this decision due to the regional state's destructions following the war between the central and the regional governments. Early November, a conflict broke out in the Northern part of the country following the long rising tension between the two governments.

Salsay Woyane was one of the political parties that participated in the Tigray Election held in September. The regional state had the election despite the House of Federations resolution ruling the election as “null and void”.

The regional state government step into holding the election in Tigray after the federal government has postponed the sixth general election to this year due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.
