Somali Regional State Investment Forum opens in Jigjiga

A major investment conference, which is the first of its kind to be held in Somali region, kicked off today in Jigjiga. The conference, which was officially opened by president Mustafa Omer of Somali region, was attended by a large number of Somali investors from the Horn of Africa region.

Organized by the Office of Investment and Diaspora, the conference aims to showcase  existing investment opportunities in the Somali region. In his opening remarks, president Mustafa Omer said “Somali region was a place known for insecurity and human rights abuses in the past. However, the region is now recovering from that dark era due the changes that took place in the last two years.”

President Mustafa said his government is committed to promote free trade and  investment opportunities in Somali region. In addition, the president noted that Jigjiga is a growing city ready for economic integration, which will strengthen security in the Horn and create employment opportunities for citizens.

On his part, Tamasgen Telehun, the deputy commissioner of the Federal Investment Office, said the conference was an important platform to showcase the potential resources of Ethiopia, in particular the untapped investment opportunities in Somali region.
