Prosecutor obstructs 402 early marriage cases

The Amhara National Regional State Prosecutor office says it has blocked 402 early marriage cases that were requested throughout the region in the last six months.

Speaking about the child marriage prevalence in the region, Mr. Alemshet Mihretie, the office’s public relations head, said that his office received over 1200 marriage requests among which 402 are evinced as early marriage. 

 “We are convicting those who have made unlawful marriages”, Mr. Alemshet stated.

Addis Zeybe spoke to central Gonder zone, which reported significant number of early marriage cases.

“A child as old as 11 are getting married”, says Mr. Mare Bire, the zonal prosecutor’s office head.

Mr. Mare also expressed that the fate of the children is worse as they are dropped out of school and exposed to human trafficking.

Addis Zeybe has learnt that individuals and families who were involved in the child marriage cases are appearing before court.
