US Assistant Secretary Condemns Repression under the Pretext of Covid-19
Ambassador Tibor P. Nagy, Assistant Secretary to the Bureau of African Affairs, condemned the repression of people or ideas in the media or elsewhere under the pretext of Covid-19 in a telephone briefing today. He gave his opening remark saying the U.S. will continue to collaborate with its African partners to address COVID19 and addressed the issue of repressed press freedom in the African Continent under the pretext of the issuing of the state of emergency.  "As we reflect on the importance of transparency in other matters such as aid, debt and health information, the benefits of working with a free and open society, versus one that is not, is readily apparent," he remarked. He also noted that Government responses to the COVID19 pandemic must focus on protecting public health and that governments should not use the disease to block the free flow of ideas. In light of World Press freedom day being celebrated in the recent past, the acts of these governments in restricting press freedom and withholding information as to the proper amount of people that are infected by the virus and the transparency of the way the testing is done was denounced by the Assistant Secretary.Meanwhile, a report done by Human Rights Watch states that the Ethiopian government has been using Covid-19 restrictions and the recently declared state of emergency as a pretext to restrict free speech.  Concerning the response to covid19 Ambassador Tibor mentioned that the United States of America is very focused on providing assistance across the border and will provide materials of the highest quality to the Continent.
